I followed the simple Get Info method to copy icons to my folders and had everything working perfectly. But every time I reboot the custom dock icons switch back to generic blue folder. Oddly, if I right-click the dock folder and toggle to "Display as Stack" and then back to "Display as Folder" my custom icon is once again displayed on the dock (until I reboot...). And very strange, somehow Microsoft 2008 custom stack icon keeps its identity through reboot. Hmm... Why? Fortunately OS X is stable enough I don't reboot all too often. Custom folder icon reverts back to generic after reboot.

Drag the image you want to use for your new icon into Img2icns and then drag your folder on. The app will do the work of changing out the icon for you.
